Soundwaves - Music Documentary

Callum Thorpe – 23/07/2019 – 17:40

Where are our next big artists?

Soundwaves is a music documentary series that aims to answer this question. Each with their own vibrant musical history, every episode is set in a different UK city and explores their current music scene.

The first episode is set in Birmingham and features local band The Mighty Young. It’s currently being perfected and we at FootFox really can’t wait for you guys to see it!

Disappearing Venues

The UK currently has a massive problem! There is a scarily high rate of venue closures. Just in April 2019 at least three major small venues have all closed. The Harley in Sheffield, The Maze in Nottingham and The Victoria Inn have all become part of the sad trend. With The Harley having hosted pre-fame Arctic Monkeys and Royal Blood, the owner has put the closure down to financial pressures.

In 2018 a report by UK Music estimated that in just 10 years, the UK has lost 35% of it’s music venues. Shorty after, the UK’s first live music census found that a third of our music venues are struggling financially and are fighting to survive.

The lack of venues is a massive issue bands are currently facing and it is something that we at FootFox address via Soundwaves.

Birmingham venue The Sunflower Lounge has showcased talent since 2002 and continues to do so regularly.

The Creation

Taking inspiration from the Foo Fighters documentary, Sonic Highways, Soundwaves was originally created to explore music history and the current scene of different UK cities with the first episode focusing on Birmingham. As planning went on it was noted that there hasn’t been a big artist out of Birmingham in recent years. The series now had a new aim: to ask where our next bands are coming from and why. Filming around Birmingham, the crew visited Matt Davies, owner of The Mushroom Studios, Jay Downes, Bass and Guitar Specialist at PMT, The Britpop Carousels (as they set about recording new music) and local band The Mighty Young, interviewing drummer Robb Cartin before the band played at The Sunflower Lounge. These interviews helped us to understand how important these places are for local music scenes but also how rare they are.

The crew, made of Ben Hatfield, Ben West and Callum Thorpe, had a great time going out and meeting the local music patrons and we have come away with a greater appreciation of our local music scene.

Hopes for the future........

We hope that the Soundwaves movement will take off. We would love to release the first episode soon and that we can create the full series and carry on with our mission to find where our next bands are coming from and delve deeper into the issues wannabe artists are facing.

But ultimately we hope that this documentary will inspire you to also go out and enjoy your local artists just like The Mighty Young from Birmingham.
